What Private Boat Tuition Covers

Private tuition at Jurassic Aqua Sports is built around what you actually need. Sessions take place on the water in the sheltered waters of Portland Harbour, giving you real conditions without the pressure of open sea sailing. Your instructor will work through the areas that matter most to you, at a pace that suits your experience and confidence.

Typical sessions cover some or all of the following:

Launching and recovering your vessel, preparing the boat and crew, close-quarters boat handling, picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside pontoons, anchoring, man overboard procedures, and an introduction to chart plotters and GPS navigation. If you have specific goals, just let us know when you get in touch.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

During the course you will cover the following:

Confidence handling your own boat in a range of conditions
Practical skills in close-quarters manoeuvring, including berthing and mooring
Safe launch and recovery technique
Man overboard response and recovery
Basic GPS and chart plotter navigation, including use of Navionics
The ability to assess conditions and make safer decisions on the water
A clear picture of where to develop next, with honest instructor feedback

Do I need my own boat?

No. Tuition can take place on your own vessel or on one of ours. Just let us know when you get in touch.

What experience do I need?

None at all. Private tuition is suitable for complete beginners through to experienced boaters wanting to refine specific skills.

Where does the tuition take place?

Sessions are based at Portland Marina, Weymouth, Dorset, with practical time on the water in the sheltered conditions of Portland Harbour.

How long is a session?

Sessions are arranged to suit you. Contact us to discuss your requirements and we will agree a duration that fits your goals.

Is private tuition delivered by a qualified instructor?

Yes. All tuition at Jurassic Aqua Sports is delivered by RYA-qualified instructors based at our RYA recognised Training Centre in Weymouth.
